Humboldt penguins are a South American penguin that typically lives in coastal Chile and Peru. They are named after the cold water current that it swims in. They are medium-sized penguins only growing to 22-28 inches. Females are slightly smaller than the males, but otherwise look very similar.

Humboldt penguins nest on islands and rocky coasts, burrowing holes and sometimes using caves. They typically eat a diet consisting of small-fish caught using their pristine diving skills.

Due to a declining population caused by over-fishing, climate change and ocean acidification, the current status of the Humboldt Penguin is threatened. The current global population is estimated to be between 3300 and 12000.

Trivia

  • During the Tobu Zoo collaboration with Kemono Friends, a paper cutout of Humboldt Penguin was made. One penguin, Grape, stayed with the cutout so much that people thought that Grape was in love. Due to the popularity of the screenshots, fanart and merchandise have appeared, and Humboldt Penguin's VA went to meet Grape.
