A South American penguin that typically lives in coastal Chile and Peru, the Humboldt Penguin is named after the cold water current that it swims in. They are medium-sized penguins that grow to about 22-28 inches. Females are slightly smaller than the males, but generally are similar in all other aspects.

Humboldt penguins nest on islands and rocky coasts, burrowing holes and sometimes nest in caves. Their diet typically consists of small-fish caught using their pristine diving skills.

Due to a declining population caused by over-fishing, climate change and ocean acidification, the Humboldt Penguin is currently threatened. The current global population is estimated to be between 3300 and 12000.

Trivia

  • During the Tobu Zoo collaboration with Kemono Friends, a paper cutout of Humboldt Penguin was made and put on display. One penguin, Grape, was so attracted to the cutout that people assumed he was in love. Due to the popularity of the screenshots, fanart and merchandise pairing the two together became prominent, and Humboldt Penguin's VA met Grape. Grape passed away on October 11, 2017, 21 years old.
